Flinders Street Station: Clocktower
The opportunity was also taken to refurbish the clock mechanism and clock faces and to refurbish the exterior stonework, with new balusters being formed out of concrete on-site. In order to facilitate this latter activity, scaffolding had to be erected from a structurally solid base. Temporary steel work was installed over two nights (see Night works) and removed on completion of the works.
A prominent feature in the Melbourne cityscape, the clock tower was subject to some significant structural work to stabilise it and to protect it from the ‘one in one hundred year’ earthquake. This was achieved by vertically pre-stressing the tower, in itself a challenge due to the narrowing of the tower towards its top.
