Flinders Street Station: Ballroom & Gymnasium

Both of these spaces had been closed to the public for 32 years and left without any maintenance or repairs. As a result of water ingress, there was significant damage to the finishes and structure. The contract included making the areas watertight and structure sound.

In the ballroom, the ceiling finish was removed and the graceful curves of the timber arches strengthened with steel arches in a way that retained the original structure.

In the gymnasium, the external walls were strengthened by the addition of engaged reinforced concrete columns.

In both areas, and across the whole of the building, the roof was upgraded and made watertight.
